Does Money Influence Education?
Questions about whether education should serve an individual or society’s interests arise, especially now with people paying more for education and teachers’ resources in question. Even though students may desire to be taught in a certain way because they pay fees, teachers know what is best for them,
. As people look to solve these social problems, it is essential to start with the younger generation and teach them better ways..Schoolsshould raise a generation of problem solvers who can identify and correct social problems in their environment, for example, pollution, violence, racism, and poverty.
As students pay higher fees, it is reasonable to assume that they will hope to receive education to their liking. Buteven though they are paying for what they are learning, students are not treated as customers who should get what they want. Students may argue that they pay for educationjust like customers pay for services in other business sectors and thus have the right to expect quality services or products in return,
In conclusion, regardless of the amount of money students are paying for education, education’s value is far more than that.
Hello, as my comments in the margins indicate, you are missing the mark in this analysis. What is at issue is Socrates lament that paying teachers necessarily corrupts the teaching/learning process. As a teacher I can relate to what Socrates argued because even though I am charged with the responsibility of teaching students what they need to learn (instead of what they want to learn), there is definitely pressure to lower standards and allow failing students to pass because we can’t afford the loss of revenue. So, even though money shouldn’t matter, it undeniably has an effect on how and what we teach. In your analysis you can maintain that education should serve a purpose that is greater than satisfying individual wants, but you don’t need to dwell on that idea because it is not what is at issue.Instead, you need to examine more in depth how introducing money into the process affects thehigher goals of education. Does it undermine it, as I have indicated? Or is money a necessary component of higher purpose education because good quality teachers (or any person) will not be attracted to a profession that does not provide a livelihood? Is there a middle ground to this problem? In Socrates’ time teachers were paid directly by students, thus making teachers more susceptible to satisfying the wants of their paying students because if they didn’t they wouldn’t get paid. Is it better to have a system whereby teachers still get compensated, but indirectly, i.e. through a government institution, so that teachers do not fall prey to the demands of satisfying the customer by altering what they teach or lowering standards? This then raises questions about any market-based model of education funding because it could be argued that the more directly students pay for their education, the greater likelihood an educational institution will be influenced by that essential funding stream to lower standards, alter curriculum, and hand out degrees. Once a profit motive enters into the picture, let the corruption begin. That is what Socrates was dismayed about and that is what you need to analyzie in depth. Score: 28
