Beadle and Tatum working with Neurospora found that a heritable change in the structure of a gene can result in the absence of the activity of an enzyme. This observation leads to the finding of the relation between gene and enzyme. They also observed in one of their experiment that Neurospora (Bread mold) cells are able to survive and grow in an incomplete nutrient medium as it has biochemical pathways that can convert salts, sugar (sucrose), and biotin of the incomplete nutrient medium into major components needed by cells such as vitamins and amino acids, which are the essential components of a complete nutrient medium.
However the mutant forms of Neurospora will not grow in the minimal nutrient medium, they will require a vitamin (Thiamine) for their growth. In mutant forms, nutrient medium composition plays a major role in the growth of bread mold (Neurospora). An incomplete nutrient medium with no amino acids and enzymes leads to the improper growth of Neurospora but a complete nutrient medium with proper interaction of gene and enzyme leads to the growth of Neurospora crassa.
